For the holidays, streaming services are releasing their Christmas movie lists. While LGBTQ+ representation isn’t where we’d hoped it would be by 2022, there are still some exciting films to look forward to.
Jake Helgren wrote and directed the film, which tells the story of two old friends who get together in their hometown over the holidays. It also shows the exciting treasure hunt for the homecoming party.

Taylor Frey plays Austin Craig
Frey will play Austin Craig in the upcoming Christmas movie A Christmas to Treasure on Lifetime. His character is close to Everett, played by Massey, who used to be his best friend. They meet for a holiday treasure hunt.
Frey is best known for his role as Don Hagerty in It Chapter Two, filmed by Warner Brothers (2019). The 33-year-old actor was born on April 29, 1989 in Oslo, Norway. He has been in the entertainment industry for over a decade since 2010.
Frey started out as an actor on Broadway. He’s been on shows like Hairspray, South Pacific and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Gossip Girl, Days of Our Lives, Summertime and Secrets in the Woods are all TV shows he has been on.
Everett Matthews is played by Kyle Dean Massey
In the film, Massey plays the role of Everett. The main focus of the film is the characters he plays with his real-life wife, Taylor (Austin).
He is also known for playing the lead character in the Broadway musicals Wicked, Pippin, and Next to Normal.
From 2015 to 2018, he played the role of country songwriter Kevin Bicks on the popular musical drama show Nashville. The 124th and final episode of the soap opera aired on July 26, 2018.

Katie Walder as Tipper Tisdale
Walder is an American actress, writer and producer. She is best known for her recurring roles as Janet Billings on Gilmore Girls, Shannon on How I Met Your Mother, and Sherry on Mad Men. She’s been in business since 2002, that’s about 20 years.
The talented actress has appeared on over forty TV shows including Franklin & Bash, New Girl, Fairly Legal, Supernatural, The Good Wife and Rules of Engagement. Katie played Trevor Wright’s girlfriend in the award-winning film Shelter.
Katie played Sarah in the 2014 horror film Come Back to Me. Her recent work includes Thanks for Trying, Alexa & Katie, How to Get Away with Murder, 30 Nights, Here and Now and The Open House.

Humes, an American actress, won the Miss Florida USA pageant. She also placed third in the Miss USA pageant in 1975. She later began working as an actress on television, appearing in more than 50 shows.
Mary is best known for playing Gail Leery, the lead character’s mother, on the WB teen drama Dawson’s Creek from 1998 to 2003. She made her film debut in 1981 in the comedy History of the World, Part I.
When is A Christmas To Treasure coming out?
The first episode of Jake Helgren’s A Christmas to Treasure will air Friday, December 16, 2022 at 8 p.m. on Lifetime. You can stream them the next day.
The film is a heartwarming story about two old best friends who get back together over the holidays in their hometown. After the death of a beloved old neighbor, they are among six friends who get together for a holiday treasure hunt in their hometown.
Massey and Frey, who play the main characters, are a real-life couple. Helgren has also worked with the Broadway actors on other projects in the past. Still, it was easy to choose the two as the main actors for an LGBTQ+ vacation film.
Frey also posted the exciting news about his upcoming film on Instagram. He wrote in the post’s caption, “Playing against my husband was both fun and a lot of fun.” He also thanked “the best directing and producing team” and praised the actors.

Frey and Massey, the two main characters, are a real couple! The Broadway stars got married in 2016 and a surrogate just gave birth to a baby girl. They’ve also worked with Helgren before, so choosing them as the main characters in an LGBTQ+ vacation movie was easy.
“Both had played direct leads in Christmas romances I’d previously written, so naturally when I asked them to play the roles, they were thrilled,” he said. “It’s funny, I texted them the idea and they said yes before I even wrote the script! They are so honest and easygoing and I always have a great time with them on and off the pitch.”
Speaking to People about the new film, Frey said: “Playing against my husband was fun and a lot of fun. We’ve also been fortunate to have a great cast and the best director and producing team anyone could wish for.”
Mary Margaret Humes (Dawson’s Creek), Katie Walder (Shelter) and Roberto Aguire also star in A Christmas to Treasure. The film will be released at the same time as The Holiday Sitter, which stars Jonathan Bennett and also has a gay protagonist.
There have been a lot of LGBTQ+ holiday movies in the last two years. The Christmas Setup, released on Lifetime in 2020, was the first gay Christmas film. 2020 saw the release of The Christmas House and Single All the Way, among other films. But this year, broadcasters haven’t put the same effort into telling stories that are interesting for everyone. We hope that even more will happen in 2022.
How to plan a treasure hunt for Christmas
First, a brief overview of this type of “hunt”. “Scavenger Hunts” pit players or teams against each other to find and/or photograph the most items on a list in a given time. In a “treasure hunt,” players or teams follow a series of clues (sometimes in the form of riddles) to eventually find a prize. Also, this is the one we’re talking about.
You can of course write your own clues for your Christmas treasure hunt, but if you don’t have the time or energy to do so, there are plenty of holiday-themed clues online. You can write them down yourself or use some of the free hints that you can download and print out.
The plot of A Christmas Treasure
The Webb family has long lived in Pine Grove. This year they will unearth a time capsule buried since the city was founded 100 years ago. Lou (Sparks) works at the local newspaper her family has owned for as long as anyone can remember. She thought about moving to New York to become a writer, but when she saw an old diary of her grandfather in the time capsule, she changed her mind.
Kyle’s (Xavier) vacation trip leads to Pine Grove. The charming chef is at a turning point in his own life, and he hopes his visit will help him make sense of things. When Lou and Kyle meet, it becomes even more difficult for them to decide what to do.
Casting for a Christmas sweetheart
Jordin Sparks is best known for her time on American Idol, where she was nominated for a Grammy. She will sing her own song “Oh, It’s Christmas” and two classic Christmas carols, “This Christmas” and “O Holy Night” in the film. The songwriters’ singer songs have been downloaded more than 10 million times in the United States.
Michael Xavier has had recurring roles on The Expanse and Northern Rescue and has been a regular on Bitten. The Ottawa-born actor has also had roles in the films Christmas Comes Twice, Shazam!, The Bold Type and Taken.
